Pride and Prejudice Proposal
Video Clip of "Pride Prejudice"
Year : 2008
“Pride
and Prejudice” written by Jane Austen in 1813. Set in 19th century
England centered on a young girl, Elizabeth and her family. This cinematic
adaptation of the “Pride and Prejudice” novel brings the story and romance to a
new impressive level. Directed by Joe Wright this film continues to capture the
mind and heart of any Austen fan today. Even though this novel was written so
long ago it continues to hold its spot on as one of the most beloved books of
all time, which explains why this piece was extracted from the film and posted
by shaden5 on Youtube.com for all to
see.
Throughout the movie we experience the struggles
of life and love alongside her. Darcy, a man of status and money struggles throughout
the story to accept his feelings for Elizabeth. For much of the story Darcy
fights to find his happiness and defy the status driven world he lives in.
Finally as the film draws to a close and Elizabeth takes a stroll in the
morning sunset Darcy completely gives in to his feelings for Elizabeth. This art piece captures the moment of
Elizabeth’s and Darcy’s Proposal. This moment emphasizes and epitome of their
love.
This cinematic depiction of the
classic and loved novel seems to hold the hearts of many; with its use of
contemporary young actors it exemplifies the timelessness of simple romanticism. Darcy and Elizabeth’s mutual proposal shows
love in its purest form. Without the extravagance,
and without expectation, “simplicity” holds the possibility of unlimited
amounts of passion and honesty. I, an
avid reader of Austen’s novels have found comfort within “Pride and
Prejudice”. Before having seen this film
version of the story my heart was already drawn to the story and how “simple”
its romantics were expressed. I have never quite been the “hopeless romantic”
but through this story I was able to find my idea and imagination towards love.

Engagement Ring
Year: 2012
My
brother, Mike and his girlfriend, Samantha of seven years have been dating ever
since their sophomore year of high school.
When I interviewed Sam she said that as they moved in together (the
previous year) and as their relationship became more serious she knew he would
be contemplating a “very romantic,
simple and elegant proposal.” Samantha was never quite the fantasy proposal
type; she never imagined what her proposal would be like.
Mike
proposed to her on their six year anniversary. The both loved to be outdoors
and go on hikes so that day he asked her if she wanted to go on a hike at the
state park. Even though it was a gloomy
day outside she decided to go and figured she could take some pictures while
she was there. During the interview Sam
told me that again unlike most girls she” loves being outside in the rain.” The
state park they went to is known for its covered bridge and its water powered
mill. My brother Mike showed her a lookout point on the bridge she had never
seen before, as she took pictures of the small quaint waterfall my brother mike
stood behind her diligently holding the umbrella. He edged his way closer and
closer to Sam, and she said she “just thought he was trying to look at her
pictures.” She started talking so she turned around as my brother mike held the
ring in his hand and held himself as close to her as possible and asked “Will
you marry me?”
So sure
my brother didn’t kneel down on one knee and ask her to marry him, but after
seven years of young love they already considered themselves not quite the
“norm”. Living in a Pittsburgh apartment together both of them work full time
jobs and go to school and still struggle to pay their bills. So he didn’t quite
have the money to take her to a fancy restaurant or buy her the biggest ring (actually
he also bought the wrong size!!) but those things even though they are simple
and silly are a realistic portrayal and honest representation of their
love. There were no special effects, no
big production crews, and no room full of flowers and yet Sam says “it was
perfect.”
My
family tends to have these “simple” proposals so it was important to me to share
one of them. They may be common and they may be understated because of the
media’s emphasis on extreme weddings and proposals but the couple involved in
the proposal it’s a moment they will never forget. The ring picture I chose for my art piece is
a symbol of my soon to be sister-in-law and my brothers love. I describe it as
“simple and elegant” just as Sam called the proposal. Art is something that evokes emotion that
involves thought and care, with either a purpose or a lack of purpose. The
simplicity of a proposal can create romanticism; it can make it memorable and
remind that couple of that day every day for the rest of their life.
