“Serendipity” is a romantic comedy where Kate Beckinsale’s character Sara seeks love with a man she met in Bloomingdales. In this scene Sara returns to her home to find it has been filled with candles and rose petals. The room is only lit by the candle light making it a very romantic scene. She is so surprised it takes her a moment to realize that in front of her is a giant box with a tag that says “open me”.  When she finally notices the box she begins to unwrap and open it only to find inside it is another wrapped box. It continues to be full of smaller boxes until she gets to one small black satin box, but when she opens it its empty. From behind comes John Corbett’s character into the room holding a ring and says “you have to say yes first.”

This scene is a perfect example of a romantic proposal! Roses? Check. Candles? Check. Surprise? Check. With the candles and rose petals all over the room it gives the romantic setting every proposal needs. The boxes filled with more boxes make it unique and special just like any other piece of art, but what really makes it special is that the ring is missing from the ring box. It’s unexpected and adds even more to the surprise. Proposals are art in the way they are designed to be specific to one person and the beginning of a beautiful lifelong relationship. If the world didn’t have romantic proposals think of how boring and bland it would be. This proposal is art in the way it’s beautiful, takes your breath away, and is original. How often do you see a proposal like this? That’s one of the reasons it’s so special and even though in the movie Sara doesn’t end up with John’s character it is still goes down in history as one of the most romantic proposals.

Shouldn’t all art hang in a museum? That’s what one man must have thought when he went to great lengths to have the perfect proposal and even get it in a local art museum on his girlfriend’s campus.  An anonymous man set out to propose to his girlfriend before her college graduation and he wanted to make it memorable. He wrote on a letter going in depth on his true feeling for her and why he loved her on a large poster board. Next, he made the poster board look like an aged letter by using varnish and framed it. With his masterpiece now complete he called into the local art museum and they gladly agreed to hang his work for day to help him with his plan. Before his girlfriend’s graduation ceremony he met her and almost had to drag her to the museum by telling her a little white lie that he wanted to go to see his friend’s piece in a new exhibit. After they wandered around a bit a piece with her name written very large at the top caught her eye. While she read it he got on the ground behind her and pulled out the ring so by the time she was done reading his heartfelt letter to her she turned to see him on his knee proposing. Of course she delightedly said yes, and was able to brag about it at her graduation.

This man set out to have a memorable, original, and personal proposal and it’s obvious he succeeded. His proposal was like poetry how he wrote his feeling for her in a letter, then putting it in a museum added to making it a memorable experience for the couple to look back on. Art is something that stays with you so you can fondly look back at it and this proposal absolutely will stick with them. The fact that it’s so personal is something that makes it so romantic as well; think if he just wrote “I love you, marry me” it doesn’t have the same effect as him writing out all of his feelings for her. Art is something original that invokes feelings and this anonymous man has flourished in all aspects.
